Frequently asked questions
What happens during a physiotherapy assessment?
Your first visit starts with a conversation about what has changed, what is limiting you, and what you want to be able to do more comfortably. Your physiotherapist will then assess relevant movement, strength and function, explain the findings in plain language, and discuss appropriate next steps.
Where helpful, we may use testing technology to establish a measurable starting point and help track progress over time.
Do I need a doctor’s referral?
In most private clinic settings in Ontario, you can see a physiotherapist without a doctor’s referral. However, some insurance plans may require a referral for reimbursement, so it is a good idea to check your individual benefits plan before your appointment.
What is a movement assessment?
A movement assessment looks at how you move and where mobility, control or function may be limited.
At Kinetus, we may use testing technology to help establish a clearer baseline. The findings help your physiotherapist understand where to focus and can be reassessed later to track improvement.
What makes Kinetus different from a typical physiotherapy visit?
At Kinetus, the focus is not only on the area that is bothering you. We take time to understand what you want to be able to do, assess relevant movement and strength, explain what we find, and build a plan around your goals.
As you progress, we reassess and adjust your care rather than simply repeating the same treatment each visit.
What conditions do you treat?
We work with people experiencing physical limitations affecting movement, strength and everyday function. This can include concerns involving the back, shoulders, elbows, hips, knees, feet and heels, as well as stiffness, weakness and limitations following an injury.
Your assessment helps determine whether physiotherapy is appropriate for your situation.
What is strength testing?
Strength testing helps measure how strong different muscles or body areas are and can identify areas of weakness or differences from side to side.
We use testing technology to create measurable results that can be compared over time. This helps both you and your physiotherapist see whether strength is improving and whether your plan needs to be adjusted.
Do you offer shockwave therapy?
Yes. Kinetus Health offers shockwave therapy when it is clinically appropriate for the condition being treated.
We have access to both radial and focused shockwave therapy. Your physiotherapist will first assess your concern and determine whether shockwave should form part of your treatment plan.
How do you track progress?
We do not rely only on how you feel from one visit to the next.
Your physiotherapist may reassess movement, strength and function throughout your care. Where appropriate, we can repeat measurable tests so you can see what is improving and where more work may be needed.
That reflects the Kinetus approach: Assess. Plan. Treat. Reassess. Adjust.
What should I wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily and gives your physiotherapist reasonable access to the area being assessed.
Athletic clothing is usually a good choice. Shorts may be helpful for lower-body concerns, while a T-shirt or sleeveless top may be helpful for shoulder or upper-body assessments.
Is parking available?
Yes. Free parking is available at the building for Kinetus Health patients.
What if I have already tried physiotherapy or another treatment?
That is common.
We start by understanding what you have already tried, what helped, what did not, and what you still want to improve. From there, we assess where you are now and determine what a different approach might look like.
Will everything be explained to me?
Yes. A big part of the Kinetus experience is making sure you understand what we are assessing, what we are finding, why we are recommending certain treatments, and what comes next.
You should feel involved in your care rather than simply being told what to do.
Do you work with insurance?
Yes. Kinetus Health provides receipts that you can submit to your insurance provider for reimbursement.
We do not offer direct billing, so payment is made at the clinic and you submit the receipt to your insurer. Coverage varies by plan, so we recommend checking your benefits before your appointment.
Do I need an assessment before treatment?
Yes. Every new patient begins with an assessment before treatment starts.
This allows us to understand what has changed, assess your movement, strength and function, explain the findings, and determine the most appropriate next steps for your care.
How long is my first appointment?
Kinetus Health offers two assessment options.
Our Initial Physiotherapy Assessment is approximately 60 minutes and is designed to understand your concerns, assess relevant movement and function, and discuss appropriate next steps.
Our Comprehensive Assessment begins at approximately 90 minutes and may take up to 2 hours, depending on the level of testing and assessment required. This option allows more time for detailed movement and strength testing and a deeper review of your results and goals.
If you’re unsure which assessment is right for you, our team can help you choose the best starting point.
